Merry Christmas – Adgitize Rolls Back Ad Prices to $14

Posted by kexbrown on December 21, 2009

Merry Christmas from All of us at Adgitize. We have decided to roll back all our ad prices to the prices they were set at in September 2009.

Why? A couple of reasons. Many of you read Eli’s suggestion last week to have a one day Ad price moratorium for Christmas Day only where we would charge only $14 for new ads. This sparked a loud debate at Adgitize. My initial reaction was “no the prices are what the prices are and we will not have a one day gift price.”

But, the debate wasn’t settled. My associates began to question why I had a logo that said, “World Class Advertising on a Blogger’s Budget” when no bloggers could really afford the new prices? Why indeed. We talked, we yelled, we cajoled, we questioned and then we looked at the numbers and the old ad prices.

No matter my intent, Adgitize has costs each and every month. That was why I had raised the prices in the first place to cover the increased costs when Adgitize went to dedicated servers. But, then I was communicating with an Adgitize member named Jen and she mentioned that Adgitize was an ad Traffic Exchange. She didn’t really say that in so many words, but she was right. With the new prices, Adgitize had pushed bloggers out of our marketplace and the only ones still participating were members that were hoping to recoup their entire ad costs each month in publisher fees.

Previously, the ad prices allowed any blogger to place their blog logo or brand image on the Adgitize Ad Network and never have to worry about publishing ads to recover their ad price. Adgitize ads were reasonable. Many advertisers weren’t even publishers. Their only intent was to get brand recognition and more traffic. They weren’t interested in clicking ads. We encouraged all our members to visit our advertisers and we made our publisher fees at a rate that would entice our publishers to be both advertisers and publishers.

But, a year and a half ago I had an intent to create a Publisher / Advertiser model in the vein of Google and Yahoo. Advertisers would come to Adgitize to create traffic to their blog with no intent or expectation of being both an advertiser and a publisher. Publishers would place the Adgitize Ad Groups on their blogs with the hope of recovering blog costs and maybe earning a little more for fun things throughout the year.

But, I screwed up. I made the publisher fees such that it encouraged a marketplace of publisher / advertiser members. I made a big point of how each advertiser could earn enough each month to cover their ads on Adgitize. This was good and encouraged many to become advertisers. But, that model was also flawed in the fact that to make it work the publisher fees had to be high.

The new higher prices would work and could help sustain the business. But, we lost many good, honest, hard working bloggers in the process. Many bloggers work part time, enjoy writing and want to make a couple bucks and get some traffic. They aren’t a Target, Kohl’s, JCPenny or a Home Depot advertising with millions of dollars in their budget. They just want some traffic, some comments and a little recognition of the hard work they put in to make their blog. I forgot that point. I raised the prices too high for these bloggers. I blew it. I am sorry.

So, as my Christmas gift to all bloggers in the world, Adgitize is rolling back our prices to the September 2009 level where you could get a one month ad for $14.

What does this mean for publisher fees? Well, Adgitize still has costs that must be handled each month. If we don’t then …. The only way to make it work is to go back to the concept of the publisher/advertiser model and move away from the Traffic Exchange model. Nothing will change except the publisher percentage will go down. Many of the top earners will see a reduction of anywhere from $2 to $4 each month from where they were in September. Many of the top earners will still earn enough to cover the cost of the monthly ad. But, the number of points to reach that level will be higher than it was in September.

When do the new lower prices begin? Immediately. If you go to the Advertise button right now you will get the new prices.

My hope is that we will have many more new advertisers and publisher / affiliates can earn additional money with the advertiser bonuses. If you have an ad in the system today at the higher rates then we will extend that ad for 22 days for $24 ad / 10 days for $18 ad / 5 days for $12 ad. Adgitize will pick up the cost during those extra days and you won’t see a reduction in publisher payouts with the extended ads. All ad bonuses will be paid at the level of the ad price. As we progress through January 2010 you will see earnings begin to drop each day as new ads enter the marketplace at the new prices. This will be a gradual process.

We rushed through these changes over this weekend and we hope you can join us in cheering the holidays with lower advertising costs now and throughout 2010. If you want to blame any one for being stupid with ad prices you can blame me. I make mistakes. The higher ad prices were a mistake and I hope you can forgive me for that decision. I wish you all the best during the holiday season and a very special New Year!

  • cornyman said,

    Congratulation to this decision, Ken!

It’s a fair decision to extend the ads of the advertisers who bought the ads to the higher prices.

It’s a good opportunity for all the new members who joined in the last two months to begin the New Year with affordable traffic.

In the end everyone will get again what they deserve:
    - a good amount of traffic
    - cheap advertisement
    - active publisher a big cash rebate

    PS:

Is the affiliate program still ongoing with now again 5$?

  • kexbrown said,

Yes the affiliate ads will return to $5 – $3 and $2 for $14 ads, $10 ads and $7 ads respectively.

  • Mariuca said,

YAY!!!!! Thank you Ken, this is indeed wonderful news and pls no apologies necessary. Overall, you’ve been doing an excellent job with Adgi and despite the price increase last month, I still believed in Adgi enough to renew my ad at the new price.

I am a little confused with this part though..

If you have an ad in the system today at the higher rates then we will extend that ad for 22 days for $24 ad / 10 days for $18 ad / 5 days for $12 ad.

I currently have an ad at $24,expiring on the 1st of Jan I believe. Does this mean I will get an extension of 22 days for FREE?

Thanks again Ken, this new development definitely made my night! :)

  • Mom said,

    Hooray!

I’m impressed that you are so willing to admit that you messed up… Thanks for the changes.

  • kexbrown said,

@Mariuca – Yes, your ad will be extended 22 days at no extra cost to you. I will be picking up the price of those additional days. Merry Christmas!

  • Bachrum @ Online Business Solutions said,

Yes Ken, I think you take a right decision for the ads prices.

in the last two month, I saw that the advertiser number was going down each week. I hope that the new prices will bring back the advertiser interest for Adgitize.

    PS:

Is the publisher fees could have the possibility to be remain as the November rate?

  • Sadermaxx said,

Thanks Ken, the ad prices are more affordable now, there for I renew my ad already.

Merry Christmas to you all !

  • carol at A Second Cup said,

    Thank you! And Merry Christmas

  • Mom's Cafe Home Cooking said,

This is welcomed news! In all honesty I did have to reduce advertising because of the price increase but I don’t feel blame should be pointed towards anyone. The economy dictates that prices do go up and you have to cover your costs. That I understand and given what a top notch service Adgitize is I didn’t have a problem with the price increase. Reducing my advertising to 1 blog rather than 2 just kept my advertising within my means. So really Ken, please don’t blame yourself for this. You’ve made Adgitize a great place to advertise and it’s affordable. It gives good results for the advertising costs. What more can anyone ask for? If you don’t try a few new things you won’t know if they will work.

    Happy Holidays :)

  • liezl said,

This is a very good news that’s why I renewed my ad straight away! More power to adgitize…

This is the best Xmas Gift we bloggers can get!
Merry Christmas to you and all members of the Adgitize team! I’ll definitely begin advertising again after this Christmas Weekend!

    Thanks Ken!

  • Eli G said,

Ken, I joined the other bloggers above in saying that you don’t have to apologize because you did not make any mistake in raising the ad prices.

A price of $24.00 for a 31-day ad seen in the landing pages of 5,000 blogs 24/7, on a random rotation, coupled with cash rebates for active members, is actually fair and reasonable.

However, you and Adgitize have earned more goodwill, patronage, and members’ loyalty in reducing the ad prices to September 2009 level in this Christmas season.

Your decision of a price reduction is a wise strategic move, and it reminds me of my Chinese businessmen clients in my consulting activities.

In the face of competition, the Chinese businesspersons always follow a market penetration pricing strategy by setting lower prices for their goods and services, believing in volume and quantity to generate more sales and maximum profit.

That there are already members who suddenly bought their ads at the now reduced price is proof of your wise decision.

I can see that the Adgitize star is now shining brighter once more, bringing more cheers and gladness to bloggers this holiday season.

  • Flo said,

Wow, I feel terrible!!! I did not renew my ad when the prices went up but it had nothing to do with the prices. It had to do with my being too busy to ‘work the system’ and I took a break. I decided though that I missed the blogs I encountered on Adgitize and came back to find all this going on. I was prepared to only place one ad at the higher prices, but coming here and reading this I think I’ll place two.

  • Eric said,

what can i say? but kudos to Ken and his associates for this business decision.

I’m going for a 1-week holiday starting tonight, BUT I’ve got to run now to renew my ads. ;)

  • Eric said,

As I’ve posted om my previous comment, I was about to renew my ad today but it’s already Renewed, automatically!!! wow! this is great! it’s extended by 22 days!

    Thanks, Ken!

    PS.

As a gesture, I’m going to buy another ad today ;)

  • sharkbytes said,

Whew! I’m busy for one day and check in tonight, and lookie what happened! Wow… Ken, your integrity is remarkable. We all appreciate the lower cost again. Here’s wishing you 300 new advertisers, quickly!

  • Chinaren said,

Ken, you made no mistake in raising prices. It was a business decision. Fair enough, it seems that perhaps it didn’t work out as such (I don’t have the numbers you do obviously), and you’ve changed it back.

Maybe there’s room for a bit of middle ground? Raise it a bit?

Anyway, the important thing is the smooth way you’ve handled the roll back. I’ll be spending the ‘extra’ on another ad I think! :)

Merry Xmas and Happy New year to you and all fellow bloggers!

  • Silvergirl said,

wow!! a christmas gift to all of us. For sure because of this news, all will renew their ads!! Great job Ken.

  • WillOaks Studio said,

Like Sharkbyte, I’ve been sort of distracted the past few days but this great news has really made my day! For the holidays, I had added a 2nd ad to steer clicks to my Etsy shop. I thought it was a one time thing, but I may need to renew that one, too!! Thank you, Ken and Merry Christmas!

  • sunshine said,

wonderful news! thanks you so much for this early christmas gift, Ken!

    more powere to Adgitize!

  • Julie said,

Thanks for this wonderful Christmas gift. I already saw the 22-day extension of my ad. Really good news for me. Happy HOlidays!!!

  • dickster1961 said,

The sign of a smart business man is to recognize quickly whether a decision is having the desired impact on the business. My concern when the last pricing change occurred was whether or not I would continue to earn enough to pay for the ad that I was running. Likewise, my only concern this time is swinging too far the other way. My goal in blogging has always been for it to be a self-funding enterprise. Fortunately, with the extension of my current ad, there is plenty of time to evaluate how the change impacts me personally.

  • e-djuhaedi said,

wow, what a great christmas gift. Thanks Kenny.

  • Sam said,

this is super great news ken. i have been wanting to advertise but the time i made enough to pay for the $14, the prices were then raised to $24, which was simply out of my budget. i have a lot of blogger friends who advertised with you, and have heard of nothing but good words about adgitize. am glad it’s back to $14, and even $15 wouldn’t be bad at all. thanks so much. this is a wonderful christmas gift. i understand that you did what had to do to keep the business going.. happy holidays to you and the rest of the adgitize crew.

  • DingM said,

Hello and Happy Holidays Ken!!! I’m a publisher but I intend to buy ads for my blog this January. I just hope the price of $14 won’t be raised then.
